Domestic violence is a violent confrontation between family or household members involving physical harm, sexual assault, or fear of physical harm. (Berry, 1998) Often when we think of domestic violence, we think of a man hitting women but there are many forms of abuse; emotional, sexual, physical and verbal abuse. Domestic violence acts can be committed by men or women, against children or adults. In our society, we are seeing more instances of domestic violence from professional athletes, to reality shows, and on college campuses. Domestic violence is a complicated problem that has both social and emotional impact. The leading cause of injury for women between the ages of fifteen and forty-four is due to domestic violence.(Acosta, 2013) In the Piedmont area, the domestic violence shelter program helps to provide a temporary, emergency housing for battered women and their children and continuous assistance to help them not return to those situations. Last year, the shelter pr ovided more than 12,000 nights of safety for battered women and their children – an average of 33 women and children each night. (Family Services of Piedmont, n.d.) The domestic violence shelter program provides services that help the women take control of their lives and benefits the citizens of our community. The shelter provides temporary emergency shelter for women and children fleeing abusive situations.
